Another day, another suicide
Well, there has been another high profile suicide in Korea. This time the person was a Mr Shin, the head of Vision Foods, a frozen dumpling maker, one of a dozen companies involved in a scandal known locally as the 'garbage dumpling' scandal. He jumped off a bridge into the Han River- as in the other high profile cases (see earlier postings).
This is where the makers used rotten radish scraps from China in the dumplings to save money, rather than fresh radishes.
At this time, there have been no reported cases of illness from the tainted products, and in his suicide note Mr Shin claimed that there was no health risk from the garbage dumplings, although it has had a serious effect on his health!
The more serious issue arising out of the scandal is how the KFDA (Korean Food and Drug Administration) could have reported last year that there were no contaminated frozen foods, but the recall includes some dumplings made last year.
One now has to wonder how many other tainted food products are out there in Korean supermarkets, that the KFDA has passed as safe....
Did money pass hands from the dumpling makers to the KFDA inspectors? While no-one has yet claimed this to be the case I for one would not be surprised if it turned out to be true.
